Egyptian Sphinxes

Egyptian Sphinxes

In Peristil Square lies the evidence of Emperor Diocletian’s victory over the Egyptian rebels in 297AD. The sphinx is made of black granite and dates back to the period of Tuthmosis III who lived from 1479 until 1425BC. Other sphinxes were destroyed by Christians and decapitated, but this one remains intact.
