Sissia Monastery

Sissia Monastery

Sitting on a hill behind the beach, this monastery was said to be founded by St Francis of Assisi in the 13th century. In medieval times, it was a very wealthy place, with frescoes created by notable painters. In 1953, it was destroyed by an earthquake. The ruins sit near to the spot where the new monastery was built.
