Find out moreYou’ll always have the opportunity to unwind in the secluded resort of Lourdas. This chilled-out and spread out spot is home to some of the biggest and best beaches on the whole island, but there can be a bit of a steep walk back to some of the hotels! Boat hire and countryside trails off the beaten track prove that there’s more to Lourdas than first meets the eye.

If you spend your days dreaming of long stretches of golden sand, then Lourdas Beach might be just the ticket. Caretta turtles are known to nest in this area, so keep your eyes peeled. There’s a modest sprinkling of little cafés and bars nearby too, alongside plenty of walking routes. The most notable point, however, is the imposing Mount Ainos backdrop.
Lourdas is surrounded by little towns that are just waiting to be explored. Hire a car for a few days and discover these pretty villages one by one. Around a 40-minute drive east will bring you to the resort of Skala, with its stunning beach and picturesque backdrop.
Lourdas, Kefalonia
This chilled beach is set in a sheltered bay, against the stunning backdrop of Mount Aenos and thick, green vegetation with waterfalls. The Blue Flag beach is well organised, with sun loungers on the sand and shingle, and calm waters. Behind the beach are a few bars and tavernas, where you can lunch in the shade.
Lourdas, Kefalonia
Sitting on a hill behind the beach, this monastery was said to be founded by St Francis of Assisi in the 13th century. In medieval times, it was a very wealthy place, with frescoes created by notable painters. In 1953, it was destroyed by an earthquake. The ruins sit near to the spot where the new monastery was built.
Lourdas, Kefalonia
Hire a motorboat from the Escape Club on Lourdas beach to open up a whole world of secluded coves and tranquil blue spots. Ask at the hire office for directions and suggestions, not to mention secrets – you may well see a turtle or a pod of dolphins. The sun is strong on the water, so bring sunscreen and something to drink.
