Quinta da Bela Vista

This was our 5th visit to Quinta da Bela Vista, and our 3rd with Jet2. When we find something which stands out we stick with it. The hotel is comfortable, elegant and interesting.The main dining room has really good food served by friendly and attentive staff. Half board dinner is a set menu posted evey morning at reception, and if you don't like or want anything (my wife doesn't eat fish) they are happy to provide an alternative. For special occasions, the a la carte restaurant in the original mid-19th century building is really special, starting with a glass of champagne in front of a log fire. There is a small gym and a pool whose terrace overlooks Funchal bay. Our visit ended with a flight cancellation due to airport closure by a storm and Jet 2 booked us into the Pestana Promenade hotel for one night. The Pestana staff were friendly, welcoming and helpful, but the food was undistinguished, the bedroom decor tired, and the hotel badly designed (2 small lifts in the middle of a long 110 bedroom building - chaos trying to leave in the morning). We will be returning to the Quinta da Bela Vista!

We stayed here for a week in June and were delighted with our choice. Our room was comfortable and well-furnished, with a small balcony overlooking the beautiful gardens. The hotel is situated away from the centre of Funchal and also away from the main hotel district. Funchal is at a walkable distance, but the steepness of the roads and lack of pavements means a bus or taxi is preferable. The food was first class. An extensive buffet breakfast greeted us each morning, and on half board terms we enjoyed a four-course dinner each night, with no dish repeated during our week's stay. The staff were friendly and polite, most of them spoke excellent English, and the dining room staff were all very smartly dressed in starched whited coats. The main bar is located close to the swimming pool, and the terrace next to the pool gives wonderful views across Funchal to the harbour and the Atlantic beyond. There is also small gym near the pool, and a tennis court elsewhere in the grounds. There is an atmosphere of traditional elegance about the hotel that makes it most appealing, and we can't recommend it highly enough.

We are a couple who enjoy peaceful locations for holidays but within easy access to the local attractions and restaurants, that’s what this hotel provides, local 10 min bus ride or 25 min walk into the main tourist centre, walking back is only for the fit as very steep hills. Service food and ambiance at this hotel is all very good in our opinion, our favourite way to end the day was to have dinner at the pool bar looking out over Funchal Bay in the distance whilst watching the necklaces of lights start to come on, very peaceful. Our (Twin Room) would have preferred a double, had a very nice view over the gardens and pool out to Funchal Bay, room was very comfortable and good air conditioning, bathroom fine but could do with an update but everything worked well and was very clean. Our only complaint would be that if you have a late checkout the hotel will keep your luggage in reception and your welcome to use the facilities all day, but the only place to have a shower is the gym and sauna area which only has a cold shower and is in desperate need of an update, there is a shower next to the sauna that once had two taps but looks like it’s been out of service for a long time. It’s a shame that such a nice hotel has no decent facilities for late departures. To sum up we would have no hesitation in staying here again. If you want to hire a car the hotel will give you a leaflet from a small hire company that looks very good value but it’s not, we hired direct from Europcar a 20 min walk down the hill and saved £50 on a 2 day hire including insurance, we felt a car was the best way to see the island at your leisure.

The hotel is very nice abeit a bit out of the way, lovely grounds and swimming pool, The reception staff were superb as were the pool bar staff, the only issue we had was getting in and out of Funchal town centre when you wanted to go due to the steep hill to the hotel ,and relying on the courtersy mini bus you had to plan your trips round that ,I would suggest hiring a car to give you independence to be pop where you want when you want,

The hotel is excellent in every respect. Set in extensive gardens makes it a very relaxing place. The staff are fully committed to service and couldn't do more to help. The food and rooms are also first class. We would stay there again without hesitation.

March 2019. Not usually the best time of year to visit Madeira but luckily the weather matched the sunny character of the hotel. Met on arrival by Fernando who set the standard for every member of staff we came in contact with. Front of house, waiters and household staff were, without exception, attentive, helpful and pleasant. The staff are this hotels greatest asset. Having said that, for a hotel set in acres of lush gardens with pleasant well appointed rooms, a lovely pool, terrace and bar they have some competition. We did not eat a la carte but will do next time. The half board option table d'hote was excellent with five well portioned courses. If we return to Madeira I cannot see us staying at any of the bigger, modern more brassy hotels. Hopefully staff will remember Mr room 111 and accept my compliments and thanks for a wonderful week.

Lovely hotel - rooms large and beautifully furnished with antiques - breakfast excellent - I found the dining room far too hot so sat outside by the pool restaurant for meals which was beautiful. My only gripe is the pool guy was never there to put out towels acted like it was a terrible inconvenience. He really got everyone's back up. Would def go back again (with my own towels) You do have to get cabs in and out of town - make sure they are on the clock it's about 10 euros each way!

Our second visit to this hotel within a year. We had liked it so much we wanted to come back quickly. Unfortunately my wife became unwell the hotel staff could not have been kinder or more attentive. They arranged for a doctor to visit in our room and went to great lengths to help when we decided we had to come home early. we will come back again as soon as it can be arranged.

Super hotel for a relaxing holiday, great food, service and setting - lovely atmosphere. All the staff were extremely pleasant and helpful. Just a little way out of Funchal so you do need to use the hotels shuttle bus, taxis or the local bus service.

A fantastic hotel with exceptionally helpful and well trained staff, nothing was too much trouble for them. The location is up the hill and away from the main areas of Funchal however you are only a taxi ride away, too hilly to walk unless you are a really fit. We loved the location as it was quiet and peaceful for the days you wanted a rest from sightseeing in Funchal. Excellent food and there are two different restaurants and a pool bar to choose from, if you are B&B it can be expensive so full board option or all-inclusive would be advised. Otherwise it’s a taxi to the main town. We were an all adult party so the tranquillity of the hotel was just what we needed. This may not suit everyone and if you are traveling with young children there is not option for kids clubs or activities. However there is no fight for the sunbeds and even in peak holiday season my daughter and I had the whole pool to ourselves… fantastic and definitely returning.
