Lidos and lilos
In town there’s a famous lido complex, with separate children’s pools. Walk 25 minutes out of town and you’ll come to Praia Formosa – four black sand and pebble beaches. Stop at one of the restaurants or cafés here or stroll back to town along the prom.
The garden of Europe
Winston Churchill was a big fan of Madeira, calling it the ‘floating garden’. On your Funchal holiday, you’ll find some of the world’s most exquisite floral displays, and there are six public gardens worth checking out. There’s even a famous Flower Festival that takes place every year.
An upbeat nightlife
Funchal might be an old city, but it’s also a modern capital, with stylish tapas restaurants and café bars. Head down to the marina or Old Town and you’ll find cocktails and modern Portuguese dishes on the menu. And there are discos and clubs downtown, where DJs keep the crowd going until the early hours.

Clean hotel awful gym n sunbeds
19 Jul 2017
The hotel is very clean. Sunbeds are awful they need replacing. Gym!!! What gym lol we took our gym clothing ha ha what a laugh 😂 a multi gym which fell to pieces and a bike . In my opinion it's not a 4*hotel. Fatima on reception was brilliant. We asked for a kettle for our room and one for our son and his girlfriend and was told we would have to share !!!!!!!!! Our rooms weren't even next to each other so we would have been carrying up n down the corridors 😂. Nicola our jet 2 rep sorted one out for each room. Restaurant staff brilliant. Enjoyed our breakfast.

Raga Hotel---- November 2016
10 Nov 2016
Travelled as a couple 70 Yr old, Nov 2016
Excellently situated Hotel offering every thing you expect from a 4* Hotel. We had what is regarded as one of the best bedrooms-404, Sea view, sunshine from sunrise to sunset. Corridors all carpeted so foot noise is unnoticeable Funchal is unbelievably hilly and the surrounding Hotel area is no different, many Hotels are much higher up with lots of steep banks to negotiate,So, do use the Hotel lifts (3) and be prepared to navigate 12 small steps, a slope, and you are down to street level, Cafes, shops,Tourist shop - Maderia Happy Tours, excellent to book the sightseeing trip(s) you may fancy. Bus service from this level Number 1 or 2, Buy a Travel card from Tobacco shop inside shopping mall, 50C deposit, 1.35 per journey, top up as required, regular service. Ask reception for details they are most welcoming and helpful. The Yellow and the Red hop on/off tourist buses are on this level
November 2016, second chair lift to Botanical gardens is under Engineering assessment due to the Horrendous fires earlier in the year, access information is not the best publicised but we used bus 29 -ask at bus kiosk for help and the bus stop.If you just like a wander, promenade is further down near the sea, sadly you do have to get back up though, as you exit the hotel pool and turn left, first shop is an excellent cake/cafe shop you wont want to miss it. Parking is available at the Hotel. Lounge on floor 1,restaurant on 0, out of reception, few steps over the path still on level 0, just inside the lobby is the 3rd lift down to level -2, out the lift door down the corridor passed the toilets and keep fit, out the door and into the corner of the pool area, down the few steps and your to the street level. Great weeks stay, excellent location, considered it value for our money, no complaints whatsoever. Its near the end of the UK holiday season and bookings will tail off, the Hotel didnt appear to be at full occupancy and the pool area was quiet and the restaurant always had an excellent choice of available dinning tables. Staff were sociable and if you engage in conversation they all responded.. If you are going to Funchal Hotel area, do try and check the Hotels location area, some are up horrendous steep locations.

Great Holiday
05 Oct 2016
The two of us went to stay at the Hotel Raga in August. Lovely room over looking the pool. We were direction opposite the lift doors, but no noise. Never had to save a sunbed. We stayed half board and we were quite happy with breakfast, good selection. All the staff we met were friendly and polite. Wish we had known you didn't have to take towels for the pool as these are supplied in your room. The barman makes the best Bloody Mary I have tasted. Hotel was close to all amenities and it was half an hours walk to Funchal. We enjoyed our stay at the Raga and would highly recommend it.

BOBBINS!
02 Aug 2016
I visited Madeira for the first time 11th - 22nd July up until this time I've been very satisfied with Jet 2 Holidays and the hotels they have advertised...but NOT this time. The Raga wasn't good. When I arrived I was met at the reception desk by a surly young lady who was charmless and had no idea of the concept of welcome. When I arrived at my room 910 I found a single bed in the middle of the room, I had paid a supplement for a double room with single occupancy , I went back down stairs in the VERY slow lift and spoke to the surly receptionist to explain that my room was not a double and that I had paid for a double room, she was bothered in the slightest, in fact almost looked annoyed that I'd actually had the front to speak with her about it. I insisted that something be done either another room or a refund of my supplement charge. She told me she'd inform "Housekeeping". I asked if I should remain unpacked in case I'm moved, again her only words only louder as if I was stupid or deaf or both was: "I WILL INFORM HOUSEKEEPING!" I returned to my room and waited a few minutes when there was a knock on the door and two men along with a woman greeted me with "Hello" I invited them into the room and they brought with them...another single bed to put at the side of the already present single bed! So now my room was a "double Room" but not as I had anticipated and so I had to grin a bear it for the 11 nights. For a hotel that as a 4 star rating the food was basic meat or fish every night, nothing like the assortment of buffet choices I've experienced in other hotels in the past, vegetable choice was minimal although there was many various cakes on display, however, many of the guest seemed to be stockpiling so by the time I arrived to eat, there was little left. On Tuesday I was told it was a Bar-B-Q by the poolside to accommodate this sun loungers, the very few there were not enough for ALL the guests, were moved and piled up to allow for the poolside staff who were equally as unfriendly as the receptionist to set out the various tables. It was not my intention to eat Bar-B-Q whilst on holiday so I left the hotel each Tuesday to find a restaurant on the promenade at my own further cost as I was H/b. As I came downstairs to leave I was met by the other guest dancing around the pool in a Conga! I would visit Madeira again but NEVER the Raga! Nice on the outside but bobbins on the inside with some staff and food to match.
