This is the largest surviving laurel forest or 'laurisilva' in the world. This vegetation type is now only found in Madeira, the Azores and the Canary Islands. An area of outstanding natural beauty, it's 90% forest and is home to a unique variety of plants and animals, including the Madeiran long-toed pigeon.
