Oh-so cosmo

Split is authentic as they come, but it also took the brief for style and ran with it. The palm-lined Riva promenade with its sparkling sea views, brightly coloured buildings and boats bobbing in the breeze is the perfect example. Shorefront seafood, anyone? Pull up a pew.

Beachside resorts

The nearby resorts on the Adriatic coast have a similarly welcoming beach holiday vibe. Idyllic Makarska, Tučepi and Baska Voda are all clustered around bays that place you among perfect panoramas of the chalky-white Biokovo Mountains. Head to Hvar Island for turquoise waters and soft golden sands.

Brač Island

Lying just south of Split you’ll find Brač, the third biggest island in the Adriatic, with its rugged interior, Dragon’s Cave and carvings, and Blaca Monastery. The island is also known for its white marble. If you’re a big fan of boats, mosey over to the coastal village of Milna on the west coast – it’s very popular with smart yacht owners.
