Make the most of warm waters and activities to suit everyone. You can enjoy a swim in the sun-speckled seas, a shop in the local boutiques, or even play a round of tennis or golf. In the evening, the hip dining spots show off tapas bars, international restaurants and chilled-out pubs.
You can get around Calahonda in style, that’s for sure – the little tourist train will whisk you off through the town, so you can discover every corner. But if you want to see more of the wider coast, venture to Mijas Pueblo to explore its famous streets of whitewashed houses.
Costa del Sol
Once the capital of Islamic Spain, Cordoba is full of treasures and the grand arches of the Great Mosque is the jewel in the crown. Other highlights include Alcazar, a fortress built by the Christians, the Calahorra Fort, which guards the Roman Bridge and the ancient Jewish Synagogue, now a museum.

The dramatic, five-kilometre long Rock of Gibraltar stands tall off the Costa del Sol, featuring in many a sea view. A British overseas territory, it’s home to red pillar-boxes, English pubs, bookmakers and also a thriving population of wild Barbary macaque monkeys. Good for a day trip.

Revered for the Moorish Alhambra palace, Granada is a popular destination. Explore the narrow streets of the Albayzín and Realejo quarters. Visit the Capilla Real, where Spain’s notorious Catholic Monarchs are entombed, and the lavishly decorated Basilica of St John of God.
