Catacombe di San Gennaro

Naples is known as the ‘layered city’, and for good reason. Delve below the streets to explore centuries of history at this underground cemetery, a maze of atmospheric catacombs. The walls are covered with beautiful frescoes, some dating back as far as the 2nd century AD. The catacombs became sacred when the body of Saint Gennaro was laid to rest here, in the 5th century, and it's been a site of pilgrimage ever since.
