Torrijos Monument

Torrijos Monument

This impressive towering obelisk in the Plaza de la Merced was built to commemorate General Jose Maria Torrijos. He was executed along with 48 of his men when he started a rebellion against Ferdinand VII in the 19th century. The remains of the general and his soldiers are in the crypt at the base of the monument.
