Fancy exploring a new Christmas market this year? Make a beeline for Bratislava! In November and December festive cheer takes over the city as the streets are transformed into a real winter wonderland. You’ll find the most popular ones in the main squares, AKA Hlavne namestie and Hviezdoslav Square. While browsing the souvenir stalls, be sure to make time to sample all the traditional Slovak delicacies. We’re talking hearty potato pancakes and succulent pork sandwiches. And you can wash it all down with a mug of mulled wine or honey mead. Live Christmas music and carolers round off the whole experience!

Just minutes from the main market, you’ll find this cosy spot, set against the backdrop of the Slovak National Theatre. It hosts wooden stalls with traditional food, gifts and mulled wine. But the main highlight is the ice-skating rink! Hire some skates then take to the ice and enjoy the music.

For something a little different, why not head to Bratislava Castle? At weekends, a medieval craft market takes over the castle courtyard, where you can pick up unique trinkets. You can also check out the museum, join a guided evening tour and take part in workshops.

You’ll find this towering tree beneath the town hall’s clock tower. It stands at a remarkable 12ft, draped in traditional decorations and twinkling lights. Each year, it’s donated by the town of Karlova Ves, and once the festivities are over, its branches are given to Bratislava Zoo to serve as food for some of the animals.

1. Go ice skating!
In Hviezdoslav Square, you’ll find an open-air ice rink that’s perfect for getting in the Christmas spirit. Hire your skates and glide across the ice – beginners and pros are both welcome! The crisp air, cheerful music and warming mug of mulled wine that’s waiting for you afterwards is the ideal day out.
2. Ride the Christmas tram
Take part in this cherished tradition that’s been going for generations here in Bratislava. This red tram is blanketed with fairy lights and travels in a loop around the city, stopping at festively decorated stops along the way. The best bit? It’s free of charge!
3. Ballet and opera performances
Catch iconic shows at the Slovak National Theatre, which is right in the centre of the city. Performances give a real insight into the history and culture of Slovakia and there’s a range of classical and contemporary options on offer. The elegant venue and rich repertoire make it a hub for world-class ballet and opera in Europe. Plus, it’s much cheaper here than Austria!
4. Set sail on a sightseeing river cruise
See the city from another angle when you glide along the River Danube. Day or night, you can sail along the water, taking in the landmarks and bridges along the way. Some even include dinners and wine tasting sessions for an extra-special experience.
5. Visit St. Martin’s Cathedral
For a taste of a traditional Slovak Christmas, visit St. Martin's Cathedral. This stunning Gothic landmark, known for its towering spire and historic significance, is beautifully decorated and lit up with lights. You can also experience peaceful Christmas services inside.
6. Warming tipples
Keep your hands warm with a mug of mulled wine or honey mead. It’s the perfect accompaniment to an afternoon of browsing the market stalls. The local beer here is also hugely popular! Or for a non-alcoholic option, choose a creamy hot chocolate.
