You can expect to find some gorgeous restaurants in the area serving some of Portugal’s most delicious dishes. If you’re a fish fanatic, you should try cataplana, a tasty fish stew. For some original peri-peri chicken, Guia is only a ten-minute drive away.
Praia da Gale is the place to be when it comes to sun, sea and scenic surroundings. You’ll come across teeny rock pools perfect for exploring at the eastern side, with Sao Rafael Beach a short drive onwards too. Orange cliffs and rolling waves make this a beauty to behold.
Shop for handmade woven baskets or browse the daily Calicos Market at the top of the hill. Albufeira is your best bet for oodles of shopping, just ten minutes from there in a car. Or wine not tour the famous Adego do Cantor winery?
Algarve
What better way to spend a winter break on the Algarve than with a spot of birdwatching? Ria Formosa National Park is a vast maze of lagoons and tiny islands on the coast of Quinta do Lago. This epic ecosystem is protected by UNESCO and it's home to loads of aquatic birds, such as flamingos, pelicans and storks, and fascinating creatures including seahorses. Walk along one of the nature trails or take a boat and glide through the lagoons.

The Capela dos Ossos was built by a Franciscan monk in the 16th century and lined with the exhumed skeletons of hundreds of his peers as a meditation on mortality and eternity. The inscription at the entrance leaves no doubt as to the monk’s message: ‘We bones that here are, for yours await.’

Like many of Faro’s churches, its Cathedral was built on the site of a Moorish mosque. It was completed in 1271 and can be found in the Old Town. A small entrance fee will get you access to the tower, cathedral, museum, cloister and chapel of bones. There are loads of interesting gargoyles, too.
