A 13th-century castle, old bell tower, and municipal market with an ornate façade are just three of the top sights on a Loulé holiday. Take a walk along the cobbled pavements and hunt for little shops selling souvenirs, gourmet treats and pretty pottery. Don’t miss out on sampling batter cakes and salted cod too.
Immerse yourself in nature as you enjoy a gentle stroll along Fonte de Benemola. Drive to Quarteira Beach for some R&R and much-needed sunshine, and you’ll be spoilt for seaside scenery. A daytrip to Faro or Vilamoura will see you feasting on local grilled sardines or teeing off at a prestigious golf course.
Algarve
What better way to spend a winter break on the Algarve than with a spot of birdwatching? Ria Formosa National Park is a vast maze of lagoons and tiny islands on the coast of Quinta do Lago. This epic ecosystem is protected by UNESCO and it's home to loads of aquatic birds, such as flamingos, pelicans and storks, and fascinating creatures including seahorses. Walk along one of the nature trails or take a boat and glide through the lagoons.
Algarve
The Capela dos Ossos was built by a Franciscan monk in the 16th century and lined with the exhumed skeletons of hundreds of his peers as a meditation on mortality and eternity. The inscription at the entrance leaves no doubt as to the monk’s message: ‘We bones that here are, for yours await.’
Algarve
Like many of Faro’s churches, its Cathedral was built on the site of a Moorish mosque. It was completed in 1271 and can be found in the Old Town. A small entrance fee will get you access to the tower, cathedral, museum, cloister and chapel of bones. There are loads of interesting gargoyles, too.
