Afandou’s streets are nice and leafy, so there’s plenty of opportunity to dive into the shade as you nosy around its dinky souvenir shops looking for locally-made carpets. Next to the town hall in the village square, you’ll find the Orthodox Church with an ornate tower frontage – pop inside to admire its 17th-century art collection. As you mooch about the rest of town, there are more than enough café pit-stops for a coffee or an ouzo.
The beach here is a sand-and-shingle number, complete with balmy waters that are great for swimming, and some rocky outcrops where snorkelling adventures await. It’s the island’s longest stretch for starters, and fairly crowd-free, so you’re bound to bag a spot all to yourself. But don’t worry, there are a bunch of handy beach bars to keep you well refreshed.
Afandou, Rhodes
One of the less developed beaches on Rhodes, Afandou Beach is a four-kilometre stretch of fine pebble and sand leading into the clear, calm sea. Many sections of the beach have been awarded a Blue Flag for cleanliness, and are equipped with sun beds, umbrellas and the chance to try out some water sports.
Rhodes
Monolithos is a small and well-kept village built in the style of an amphitheatre. It is home to a few traditional tavernas, but its main attraction is a medieval castle standing on a 300-foot outcrop. The castle was built in 1480 and though it stands in ruins today, it provides a great walk and beautiful coastal views.
Rhodes
Standing at just less than 800 meters, Profitis Ilias is a beautiful and imposing mountain in the centre of Rhodes island. It is named after the prophet Elias and you can visit his monastery near the summit. The pine and plane tree-covered mountain is a great place to see local flora and lovely views.
