This quaint resort is best explored by foot, so afternoons spent weaving around the tangle of streets is on the agenda. You can also walk into the hills, take a boat trip or even cast a line out and show off your fishing skills. Afterwards, sit down to fresh seafood and local wine.
A short drive or sail away, you’ll find Skala. Here, you’ll get a feel for a busier area, where the water sports options are great. Further afield, Argostoli is well worth your holiday snaps. It’s got a main square and museums, as well as the Neoclassical Kefalos Theatre for a film night.
Kefalonia
This pretty harbour village surrounded by pebbly beaches has an atmosphere of traditional Greek hospitality. It’s a popular stop off for sailing boats and there are some great waterside cafes and tavernas. You have to try the wood-fired bread from the local bakery. It is also home to a well-regarded diving school.
Kefalonia
The sprawling Venetian fortress in Assos was built in 16th century to protect the townspeople from pirates and Turks. You can take a walk up from the village through along a steep and winding track through olive trees to explore the fascinating ruins. Remember to take some water as there’s no café at the top.
Kefalonia
The secluded, colourful, rustic village of Assos nestles in a horseshoe-shaped harbour out on a peninsula, overlooked by a Venetian fortress. It’s surrounded by dramatic coastal scenery and lush green hillsides, dotted with tavernas. Time seems to stand still here and you can easily lose yourself for a few hours.
