Silves was the ancient capital of the Algarve, so there are lots of time-worn sights to see during a holiday here. The quaint Old Town clings to a hillside, topped by the stunning castle and cathedral. Swing by arcaded squares, pretty gates and medieval churches on your way up to see them.

If the coast is calling, make a beeline for Armação de Pêra. This sleepy beach resort is just a 20-minute car journey from Silves and home to the Algarve’s trademark gold-sand shores, so days relaxing by the Atlantic are on the cards.
